Beautifully appointed Toad Hall is situated in the quiet village of Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga, just three hours away from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Wakkerstroom is the ideal location for all hiking and bird clubs, small groups and families to visit and experience Wakkerstroom at a time of the year to suit you.

This charming restored Victorian house circa 1867, offers luxury accommodation for up to 8 guests….Four double bedrooms (three twins and one double) each with own bathroom. Log fires and electric blankets provide warmth in winter.

The magnificent lounge area is the ideal place to socialize with sundowners after a long day of adventuring or bird watching, enjoying a log fire, or your choice of programme on DSTV. The fully equipped kitchen enables visitors to prepare their own fare and enjoy meals in the spacious dining room.

Toad Hall is able to cater for breakfasts and dinners on request, as an alternative to self-catering. Local eateries provide anything from pub grub, picnic baskets or tapas, home cooked meals or restaurant fair, all to international standards.

The immaculate gardens offer shady or sunny walkways, or open spaces to relax and have a braai, watching the sun setting over the mountains.

Birders can look forward to various birds that are endemic to the area, and guided birding tours can be arranged. The malaria free 700 hectare wetland, with four hides, plus the drives in and around the village, out to Zaaihoek Dam or towards Piet Retief guarantee great birding experience.  Early risers may even see the otters playing in the river, and meercats and buck can be viewed on drives.

Mountain biking, hiking or scenic drives keep the more adventurous busy, and cozy log fires in winter keep the more sedate visitor warm on those lazy winter afternoons. For those interested in history, further out of the village Anglo Boer War and Zulu War sites, as well as rock art sites can be visited. Trout and bass fishing is available in dams nearby on arrangement.

Wakkerstroom Walks and Trails

A new venture has started in Wakkerstroom , walks in and around the village. The aim is to provide visitors with walks and trails that show off the natural beauty as well as the fauna and flora. Definitely the best of what Wakkerstroom has to offer.

Currently there are three historic walks, namely the War Memorial, the Harvey Greenacre’s and the Court House. There is also a nature trail focused in the Wetland Reserve which looks at the indigenous fauna and flora which will whet your appetite to explore a little more and visit the hides to do some birding.

There will be a Wetland’s walk that takes you around the Wetland Reserve.

These walks and trails can be done either on foot, biking or by car. They are self guided and should average no more than two hours each. Detailed booklets are available and any donation towards printing and signage would be appreciated.

It is also planned to do some longer trails in the mountains around the village and these will be guided trails with a few dates set per year.
