Below the Savannah of the Highveld and the forested Lowveld, lies the high marshlands of Mpumalanga’s Grass and Wetlands region,within South Africa.  This is a large area of hilly to mountainous grasslands with many wetlands ranging from sedge and reed marshes, forest patches, rolling hills and sheltered gorges; a rich tapestry of emerald vegetation teeming with birdlife.  

Several bird species are endemic to the region, and the wetland conditions, part of a fragile, crucial ecosystem, are renowned for their environmental importance and superb birdwatching conditions. Perhaps the two most popular venues in the Grass and Wetlands region for birding enthusiasts are Chrissiesmeer, the largest freshwater lake in South Africa, and Wakkerstroom, a small town near to the KwaZulu-Natal border.
