Middelburg is a large farming and industrial town situated in the Cultural Heartlands region of Mpumalanga in South Africa.

Geography and History

Originally named ‘Nasareth’ in 1846, but renamed to Middelburg in 1872 because of its location between Pretoria and Lydenburg.

The town is situated close to one of the main routes of the Kruger National Park and is a convenient stop for visitors to the park.

Activities

There are a number of interesting activities to do in Middelburg which include hiking trails, a native Ndebele tourist village and the chance to visit the beautiful Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1890.

The Kees Taljaard Park Stadium regularly hosts rugby matches and a number of local festivals and events.

The Middelburg Dam plays host to the annual Middelburg Mile swimming event. The event, celebrated its 40th year running in 2013 and is the world’s largest open water swimming event.
