Waterval Boven (Emgwenya) incl. Waterval Onder

Waterval Boven which means "above the waterfall" in Dutch, is situated in the Highlands Meander region of Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Geography and History

Waterval Boven is now officially called Emgwenya, and lies on the banks of the Elands River, above the Elands Falls.

Originally established as a supply depot along the railway line from Pretoria to Maputo, this small town is now a major rock climbing attraction in South Africa.

Emgwenya has a variety of accommodation options available from Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts to Self-catering units.

Activities

With around 600 rock climbing routes in the area this is a dream for any rock climbing enthusiast. Fly-fishing dams and rivers, horse riding, trout fishing and hiking trails offer travellers an even greater range of activities in this area.
